About Airport Codes

IATA codes are the three-letter codes on tickets and baggage tags (LAX, LHR). They are assigned by the International Air Transport Association, mainly to airports with scheduled passenger service.

ICAO codes are four-letter codes used by pilots and air traffic control (KLAX, EGLL). The first letter or two identify the country or region.

Smaller airfields often have neither and use a national or local identifier instead, such as an FAA code in the United States.
